Are fluorescent bulbs really “green”?
Fluorescent bulbs are supposedly better for the environment than incandescent bulbs. Isn’t it bad that they contain mercury? You’re supposed to dispose of them in a certain way, but a lot of the people around me don’t even know how to recycle (put recyclables in blue bag, its not hard) and I think that most people will just throw out fluorescent bulbs in the regular garbage. I heard that if you accidentally break a fluorescent bulb in your home, you have to have professionals come to clean it up. Also I heard that all fluorescent bulbs are manufactured in China, where the workers are getting mercury-poisoning. So are the fluorescent bulbs really good for the environment? Don’t tell me how much energy they save, everyone knows that. Also, why don’t we just go back to candles and oil lamps??
A lot of your questions can be answered by going to the American Lighting Associations’ web site. They will give you the proper answers and not hearsay.
Yes they save energy compared to Incandescents.
Yes they contain a trace amount of mercury, but there are a lot of other products that do also( are you familiar with those sneakers that have a flashing light in the heal? they have mercury and can you imagine how many are in land fills? ) Manufactures are working out the mercury issue by reducing the amount and trying new composites to substitute.
Yes a lot get thrown in land fills. Yes it is recommended to bag them to help keep from leeching into the soil.
No you do not need professional cleaners if you break one.
No, not all are made in China.
Yes they are good for the environment. When you use them, it reduces the amount of electricity that is needed. Did you know that most of our electricity is produced by coal fired plants. They produce tremendous amount of mercury. By reducing you electricty we reduce the amout of pollution that they create. That is the important part of reducing energy consumption. Candles and oil lamps have their own hazards associated with them
