how do you candle an austrian pine tree?
my intent is to make the tree fuller. is candling or pruning a good option for this? it is spring here in the midwest, what’s the best season to do this? how often would i do this annually? how would I go about candling and is it difficult to do?
you remove the unwanted candles 1/2 inch above the new growth and shape the tree by removing those you don’t want and leaving those you do for the shape you want the tree to respond to. or if it is for size control, remove all the candles. but not before the candle has topped off and started to spread. removing to soon and you’ll get additional growth and have to remove them all over again. use clean tools, and if you drop it to the ground, clean it before cutting on the same tree. always clean tools before you start a different tree. better safe then sorry. i’ve seen many a bark beetle tucked deep in candles. nothing they like better then a fresh tree wound to make them self at home.
oh ya, do NOT work alone. if you slip or step wrong you could get hurt. important to have someone nearby just in case. beside, your friend can stand off a bit and guide you as you move around the tree. nothing worst the stepping back to eyeball your job and discovering you just shaped the tree in the form of bozo’s profile!
