Is it okay to re-use candles in spell work?
I like to use fairly large pillar candles for prayer and meditation work, and usually re-use them. What about spellwork? Can candles be re-used or is it best to use new items?
Short answer: It is always best to use new items.
Long answer: Your pillar candles are fine for prayer and meditation work. But anything that you use in a magickal or ritual sense should meet the following criteria:
- Chosen specifically for a purpose
- Not used for any other purpose
- Must be consumed or dedicated to the purpose
Anything that you use in a working should be offered to the gods (or whatever you believe in) and not used for anything else, nor should you want to re use anything. This is one of the many reasons people have an athame, it is not used in any mundane sense.
For example: You want to do something to help you get a job. You are probably going to want to start by looking at the element of earth, where you are going to find things like stability, wealth, and physical things. So if you want to use a candle for this working, a green one would be good. Then you probably want an earthy incense as well.
So when you are doing your working you could anoint the candle with an earth oil, and scribe some symbols into it. If you don’t know a lot about talismans/symbols/alphabets you could always carve the word ‘job’ into it and a dollar sign. 
If your system involves working with any gods, then it would be good to ask some that deal with prosperity, wealth etc.
Since your question was about candles, you’d probably do some energy stuff and then light the candle. The candle should be burned down completely (and it should be supervised so you don’t burn anything down).
In a different type of working you might only light the candle when you need it (for protection for example). But that candle should never be used for another purpose.
Once you have dedicated any item to any specific purpose it should never be used for anything else, unless it is a dire emergency. With the cost of dollar store candles, I can’t foresee a candle emergency in anyone’s future.
