Inexpensive beeswax candles in Toronto?
I’m looking for a place that sells beeswax tapers that cost less than $4 or $5 each.
The least expensive option will be the “dollar stores”, where most things cost one dollar, but it will be hit-or-miss as to which store has them in stock. Dollarama is the largest chain of such stores.
If you visit flea markets you will also find a selection available, but you could also try craft supply stores.
There you may find ready-made candles and/or a chance to make your own, as beeswax is sold in sheets, and wicking should be available in the same store.
The sheets are usually rectangular in shape, and to make your own you place the rectangle on a flat surface in a manner that it looks like a diamond-shape.
You then put a piece of wicking that is 3/4 to 7/8 of the length of the longest part of the rectangle right in the middle. Leave just a bit extending past the tip of the diamond and then pick up the opposite end and fold a small corner of it it gently onto the rectangle. (f it happens to break, just leave broken piece in place, but press it down hard hard with your finger…then carry on )
Now take the corner nearest you and begin roling the sheet tightly.
When rolled completely, bend the already-folded end to close the bottom fold over the end and then get a some hot water and dip that end only in the hot water, to soften it. (You need only 2cm/1 inch of hot water)
Beeswax has a high melting point so this will cause the wax to soften, but not melt or drip. Do not immerse the rest of the candle in water as it will wet the wick, and drying may take a day or two.
Tap the warm end on a flat surface and you have completed making your own tapered beeswax candle!
(If you wanted it to be non-tapered, you do the same thing, but use a full-length of wicking, roll the sheet straight sideways, pull the wicking up just a bit before heating and tapping the the bottom, and you will have a column candle)
Another small hint….it would help to use a hair-dryer for a few seconds before rolling, as the WARM air can soften the wax and help you roll a tighter, and thus longer-burning, candle.
Yes, I have made lots of them
